September 2025 Updates
Old Stables, a new look. The first phase of the work to restore the Machynlleth Stables has been completed. The design has been the work of local architects George+Tomos with advice from conservation architect Geraint Roberts. The building work was carried out by contractors Evans & Davies.
The building now looks from the outside as it must have in the 19th century when it was built. The slated roof has been replaced and the masonry repaired. Restoration work has also been done inside to restore or maintain some of the important features.
“The Old Stables were an important part of the enhancement of Plas Machynlleth and its estate in the middle of the nineteenth century, but until recently it was hard to appreciate their value. Now that work to repair and secure the structure has been completed, their true character has been revealed once more. The original elegant design and high-quality craftsmanship are shining out again, and the building looks set for a bright new chapter in its history”.
Judith Alfrey, Architectural Historian.

The Stables Murals
Colourful murals reminding people of the past story of the Stables now add a new experience to visiting the Plas Machynlleth gardens. Local groups have taken worked enthusiastically to produce the murals with artists Liz Fenwick and Hannah Johns. The participating goups are Ieuenctid Machynlleth Youth, the Home Education Group, Ysgol Gynradd Bro Hyddgen, the Explorer Scouts and Cartref Dyfi.
These pictures tell the story of how the murals were made and how they now look proudly displayed on the walls of the old toilet block.
Sponsorship for the mural project was received from Travis Perkins Builders Merchants in the form of concessionary prices for materials

May 2025 Updates
Dear Friends of Stablau Machynlleth
It has been an exciting few months watching the work progress at the Plas Stables. Most of the slate roofing work has been done and the cupola or bellecote has been restored and painted a distinctive red. A lot of internal work has been done to repair and replace wooden support structures and lintels. The precious original stalls have been taken apart and stored.
It has also been an active few months to communicate about the project to the community and the wider world.
The A1 poster that can be seen in the Plas Foyer has been up-dated and has also been posted around various places in the Plas grounds. This was originally done for the Comedy Festival, so we hope that people will already be thinking about the Stables as accommodation for future festivals.
A Machynlleth Stables website is currently being designed and should be online in September. We also have a Facebook page (Mach Hen Stablau).
